How to Hire the Perfect Photographer

Hiring the right photographer for the job is very important. You want to pick someone who you can trust, someone who knows what they are doing and a person who understand and has the same vision that you do. This can be hard to find sometimes, so don’t become discouraged. Here are a few tips that should help you out along the way; especially if this is your very first time hiring a professional.

Ask to See Their Portfolio

One of the best and quickest ways to decide whether you want to hire someone for the job is to see some of their previous work. This is going to give you a good idea what they enjoy and allow you to see if there are certain areas that they focus on. Maybe one person is amazing working with wildlife and nature but they don’t work as much with people. This could be a problem but not always. Sometimes you can ask for a few test pictures so you can get an idea of what they are capable of. This is something to consider because just because they are new to something doesn’t mean they don’t have great ideas that would be able to capture your special moments beautifully.

Speak to References

If you like the photos that you have seen, the next best thing to do would be to talk to the person’s references. This is going to help you get a good idea as to how the individual works under pressure, how good they are at customer service and whether or not they are professional. These are all things you should talk about and find out before you even meet the person (unless they are nearby).

Interview More Than Just One

Treat an interview with a photographer as anyone would treat an interview if they are hiring someone. In your case, this should be a pretty simple step because you know what you expect and what you are looking for. You know what kind of results you want to get out of the collaboration so it should be easy for you to choose someone. Now, even if you like the first person, it’s important that you talk to many because you never know; you may end up liking someone else better. Give at least two or three interviews so you can get a good feel for what different people have to offer.

Get to Know Him or Her

During your interview, be sure that you get to know them as a person because the job isn’t just about the photos but about creating a one of a kind experience. Some people may know how to take pictures that are technically better, but if you do not connect with them on a personal level; you may choose someone else. Or, maybe you are not looking for perfection but you want a fresh perspective and photos that are a bit off-the-wall. This is why everyone selects someone different.
